Types of Jawline and Chin Enhancement
Chin Implant Augmentation
Chin implants are easy and quick to place, but we rarely use them at The Maercks Institute. This is because there are significant risks of early and late malposition and nerve damage, and chin implants erode the underlying bone and overlying soft tissues over time. This can lead to more complex reconstructive issues. Furthermore, chin implants are only able to correct small horizontal deficiencies. They cannot restore harmony to the unbalanced vertical thirds of the face. However, if a chin implant is used, Dr. Maercks will choose an alloplastic (often silicone rubber) prosthetic that matches your facial anatomy.
Implant-Free Genioplasty
Implant-free genioplasty (or “sliding genioplasty”) uses your own bone to change the projection of the chin. This procedure requires the surgical removal of bone, which is either slid forward or backward to achieve the desired results. It has the ability to adjust balance to the vertical thirds of the face by either reducing an overly prominent chin or by enhancing a chin that lacks projection. The implant-free genioplasty is Dr. Maercks’s preferred technique because it allows complete correction in any dimension, and doesn’t have implant-associated complications later on.
